Questions and Activities for practical nurses learning hospice palliative care strategiesFor practical nurses and other health care workers seeking to learn hospice palliative care strategies and skills, this study guide is a life saver. Filled with clear exercises and activites that help learners to understand how the principles and philosophies of hospice palliative care differ from other types of caregiving.
The workbook is the student's guide to studying hospice palliative care, as it first requires the learner to examine their own beliefs and acknowledge their own previous theories and knowledge. From this point, concepts in hospice palliative care are explored in practical exercises, including calculations, definitions and short answer questions. Learners proceed from here to integrate these new principles into their practice with group and individual activiites, role plays and case studies.
Completing these activities improves the acquisition of skills and strategies by providing opportunities for students to question, practice and reinforce the principles of hospice palliative care.
ExamplesExcerpt from the Introduction:
My goal for Life and Death Matters is to develop resources that will provide caregivers with the “essentials” to provide excellent care for people who are dying. I am aware that when I am comfortable with my knowledge and skills it is easier to practice the art of being fully present, without the anxiety that comes with feeling unprepared, and lacking in expertise and knowledge.
This workbook is specifically written for nursing students, and nurses interested in a self study guide. It is also intended as a resource for nursing instructors. If you are using this as part of a “class” you may have sections assigned to complete, participate in small group discussion/role plays etc. If using this as a self study guide I encourage
you to use it in whatever way helps you to reflect on your own beliefs, interact with the concepts and content, and apply theory in practice. You may want to request input
from a mentor, gather a group to facilitate learning, and/or request clinical supervision to assist in implementation.
I invite you to send me feedback on what was helpful, not helpful, and any suggestions for improvement. I am also happy to collect your stories!
I express gratitude for Elizabeth Causton and Terry Downing who contributed to the development, and to Ann-Marie Gilbert who continues to provide great editorial
support.
I dedicate this workbook to Krystal (Murray) Brown a Licensed Practical Nurse who also happens to be my daughter.
